J. William "Bill" Bowerman (February 19, 1911 December 24 1999) was a track and field coach and co-founder of Nike, Inc. was a very successful coach, training 31 Olympians, 51 All-American, 12 holders American record, 24 NCAA champions, and 16 sub-4 milers minute. During his 24 years as coach at the University of Oregon, track and field team had a season winning every season but one part, attained 4 NCAA titles, and finished in the top 10 in the country 16 times.

Early years
Bill Bowerman born Feb. 19, 1911 in Portland, Oregon. His father was former Oregon Governor Jay Bowerman, his mother had grown up in fossils. The family returned to Africa after parents divorced in 1913. Bill had an older brother and sister Dan and Mary Elizabeth ECU. Bill also had a twin brother, Thomas, who died in an elevator accident when he was less than 1 year of age.
Bill attended schools in Medford and Seattle before returning to Medford for the school. Bill played in the high school band and for the state champion football team his junior and senior years. Bill met Barbara Young, the woman he would marry, in high school in Medford.
In 1929, Bill went to the University of Oregon to play football and study journalism.
After graduation, she was professor of biology and football coach at Franklin High School in Portland in 1934. But in 1935, Bill moved to Medford to teach and coach football.
Bill and Barbara were married on 22 June 1936. Their first son, Jon, was born on 22 June 1938. William J. Bowerman Jr. (ay) was born on 17 November 1942.
Military career
Bowerman joined the U.S. Army in the days after Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to Fort Lawton in Washington and spent a year there before being assigned to the 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment at Camp Hale in Leadville, Colorado. Along with the 87th Mountain Infantry, the regiment became the 10th Division Mountain.
Their duty involves the organization of maintenance supplies and troops of mules used to transport supplies in the mountains. On December 23 1944, the division arrived in Naples, Italy and soon moved north to the mountains of northern Italy. During his term of service, was promoted Bowerman commander of the First Regiment of the 86th Battalion at the rank of Major. Bowerman negotiated a downward position of the German forces near the Brenner Pass in the days before the surrender of German troops in Italy. For his service, Bowerman received four Bronze Stars, Good Conduct medal and a Silver Star. Was given honorably discharged in October 1945.
Coaching career
After the war he returned to his post at the University of Medford. Bill and Barbara's son third Thomas was born on 20 May 1946. The family moved to Eugene, Oregon for Bill to become coach of Fishermen's Cup. His first day with Africa University July 1, 1944.
University of Oregon
Bill made his greatest mark as an athletic trainer. His men wanted in Oregon, won 24 titles NCAA Single (with victories in 15 of the 19 events contested) and four NCAA team crowns (1962-1964-1965-1970), and posted 16 top-10 of the NCAA in 24 years as head coach. His teams also boasted 33 Olympians, 38 conference champions and 64 All-American. On the double, ducks posted a 114-20 record and went undefeated in 10 seasons.
