Now, more and more parents encourage their children to pick up a 9-iron and showed great joy in beating around the yard chasing a little white ball. It seems show great enthusiasm in golf. After all, have you ever looked at a child playing ball around the house and immediately said we should make him lessons or basketball?

So what are the differences? You should remember two reasons. The first and most obvious is that the father watches his children and is expected the next Tiger Woods. Note the omission of the next Michelle Wie (More on her later). Children are too young to have dreams at a tender age so that parents dream for them.

And what is wrong with this? No harm, really. While the parents accept that their children grow up with their own dreams and dreams do not necessarily mesh with those of mother and dad. These dreams, dreams of children, are what they should be encouraged to follow, not the dreams of parents.

The second reason is that many parents are a bit skeptical of their ability to teach their children to play golf. Sports like basketball, baseball and soccer is played by children around the country parents see nothing wrong with teaching a child to shoot baskets or throw a baseball or football. But there is a stigma when it comes to golf if not teach someone the right way from the beginning is to develop a series unrecoverable bad habits. So parents who dream of their children become superstars in the links but are too scared of the classes will be taught only how to cut to find a local PGA professional to do the dirty work.

You can meet many parents who see that "something special" in their children a little glimpse of your child may become a great golfer. A player on the PGA Tour, in fact. These are parents who come to me to get their children to realize that potential. These are also the parents who have to realize that going to be about 20 years before we find out if that potential is fulfilled.

But there is a second embodiment parents also need to understand. At the risk of bursting bubbles of some, say: There are literally thousands of children of all ages around the world that what appears to be unlimited potential when it comes to golf. But it is a very small percentage of these children never meet that potential.

Michelle Wie is a great example. Five years ago, when he burst on the scene by winning the U.S. Public Links Championship at ripe old age of 13, she was not alone in your skill set. She was the best 13-year-old golfer the world had ever seen. The national media hype around it just made it look that way. But in truth, there was a lot of kids - some a bit older and some even younger - who have the same capacity Wie and the potential to become great, and perhaps a day to be the best in the world.

Ask a coach of a major college course on children who are recruiting day today. They'll tell you young people just in high school to go out and show scores in the 60 low and easy to drive the ball over 300 yards. No, Michelle is not alone. A lot of people do just think it was. Unfortunately, Wie, like other children, probably never reach their potential. She probably never win an LPGA Tour event, much less an event of the PGA Tour, and will be relegated to the "What was ..." files of golfers-past.

So what does this have to do with me teaching a 4 year old with well-meaning parents to play golf? What I mean is this: Parents should not think they are missing the boat if their children do not get golf lessons at a tender age. They will not be permanently damaged if they start to play golf at a pre-pubertal age without the guidance of a trained professional education. They will not lag behind other children to register at the David Leadbetter Academy with a golf bag in one hand and a bag diaper in the other. And, perhaps most importantly, we are not going to take a wealth of knowledge away from me or any other professional golf will become a star.
